Labour and Fine Gael better for stay at home parents

May 11, 2007

The election here inIreland is only 2 weeks away - and to be honest it’s hard to tell the differences in many of the policies of the main parties. One party says they will do something - then the other follows suit.
One difference I have noticed - it might be for selfish reasons - but I also feel it will help in a small way to encourage couples with children to be able to have one parent stay at home. Fine Gael and Labour are proposing that the tax credits for couples where only one is earning - be the same as couples with 2 earners. This seems fair to me - why should a working couple pay less overall tax than a couple with one earner?
Also they are proposing a doubling of the carers tax credit - which will also mean less income tax for single earner couples. Every little helps.
Fianna Fail will probably come up with a similar proposal soon!
